Brakes are crucial for safety, so periodic adjustment is needed. Brake lever play refers to movable distance before brakes engage. Play should be at least half of the adjustment range. To adjust:
- Loosen the lock nut on the lower brake cable end, turn the adjuster nut until desired lever play is achieved, then tighten the lock nut.
- Turning the adjuster nut clockwise reduces play, counterclockwise increases it. Spin the front wheel after adjusting, it should move freely.
Note: If brake lever travel cannot be adjusted, the brake pads likely exceeded wear limits and need replacement.
Properly adjusting brakes ensures full pad-to-rotor contact, optimizing stopping power. This prevents overheating and uneven wear. A brake inspection every few months is recommended. Remember, well-maintained brakes could mean the difference between a safe stop and an accident.
